A dystopian novel with magic, time travel, and music. A cave priestess in the painted caves, 45,000 years ago. A family in the near future, grappling with the disintegration of society and the rise of autocracies. An old woman walking the dusty terrain of a post-apocalyptic world, gathering up survivors. Connecting them: vibrations from ceremonial songs offered in the ancient caves.
Can the future be changed?
A poetic journey through the desperate years of the coronavirus pandemic and the Trump administration put in the larger context of our relationship with nature, politics and principles, and the human community. How do we find meaning and comfort during difficult, even catastrophic, times? Dr. Amundsen’s poems provide a window, even a door, that opens onto a deeper understanding of what’s at stake and how to survive these trying times.

This poetry collection emerged from the author's 2010 trip to Afghanistan for International Women's Day. The poems reflect a passionate concern both for the Afghan people besieged by war, and for the American soldiers trapped by politics beyond their control. The poetic style ranges from starkly journalitic to mystical invocation.

“Adrienne Amundsen's poems transport us with their musicality, their sensuality, their mythic span and their political passion. She is mother, lover, one of the ‘Rock People.’ She is Cassandra—the towers of Troy burning behind her—prophesying catastrophe. She is in love with the world she laments. Her poems are full of the energy of growing things-- vines, desires, women's bellies, and furious at endless wars, at "machines parading as men," at "Gaia's ruined body." Hers is a poetry that excites the senses, opens the heart, raises blook pressure. Beginning with song, ending with prayer, we are with her all the way. —Naomi Lowinsky, Jungian analyst, poet, author
